Godinu dana prije proslave dvadesete godišnjice osnutra NK “Radnik”, 1965./66., izboren je ulazak u novoosnovanu Sarajevsku nogometnu zonu, pa su Vitežani od tada igrali s daleko jačim i organiziranijim klubovima: “Bosna” (Sarajevo), “Pretis” (Vogošća), “ZSK” (Zenica), “Pofalički” i “Partizan” (Sarajevo), “Bosna” (Visoko), … Ovaj uspjeh postignut je izvanrednim
zalaganjem Uprave, svih nogometaša, vatrenih navijača, i vrijednog i stručnog trenera Mehmeda Meke Dautovića iz Travnika,
koji je kasnije s velikim uspjehom vodio drugoligaša „Bratstvo“ iz Travnika. Ulazak u viši, do tada najviši rang natjecanja, označen je svijetlim trenucima viteškog nogometa, što potvrđuje i interes ljubitelja nogometa kakvog do tada u Vitezu nije bilo. Tako je, recimo, u jesen 1965. godine, susret s tada jakom „Krivajom“ iz Zavidovića pratilo više od 1000 gledatelja, a inkasiran je prihod od ulaznica od 118.000,00 dinara. Stari zapisi kažu da se u toj sezoni, kada se izborio viši rang natjecanja, igralo vrlo dobro do tada nikad bolje, a tada je, ta snažna „Krivaja“ pregažena sa 7:0. Na toj utakmici blistali su: Krešo Kela Jurišić (Travničanin, kasnije poginuo u prometnoj nesreći), Borislav Pop Popović i Stanko Karin (kasnije i vrlo uspješan trener svog matičnog kluba, preminuo u ratnom vremenu). Ovaj, do tada, najveći uspjeh NK “Radnik” postigli su: Križanović (Radošević), Jelašković, Sivro, S. Tuco, Karin, Begovac, Dželatović, Jurišić, Popović, Grgić i Vujica. U to vrijeme o kvaliteti tadašnjeg “Radnika”, govore i pobjede, istina, u prijateljskim susretima, nad drugoligašima „Čelikom“ iz Zenice, „Rudarom“ iz Kaknja, „Bratstvom“ iz Novog Travnika i drugima.
